The Dewey Decibel System
If I ruled the world, I would do away with soulless coworking spaces and 24-hour gyms, and I would open library clubs instead.
These spaces would be designed for reading and dancing at odd hours of the day, specifically late at night and very early in the morning.
The reading room and the dancefloor would be connected, though not necessarily combined. Reading rooms, with their shelves of books, long tables, benches and chairs, would encourage independent study in a communal setting, similar to a library. One noticeable difference would be the lighting, which would be softer and warmer than most public spaces.
There would also be areas for reading socially where people could relax on sofas, cushions and rugs. This would serve as a transitional space.
If you were to imagine the layout like a classical art museum, one wing would be the reading room, the other wing the dancefloor, and the two halls connecting the wings would be tea lounges, with an open-air courtyard of fountains and fruit trees nested in the center. Conversations could be held in the courtyard or tea lounges but not in the reading room or on the dancefloor, which would be a phone-free zone.
